Pet Moving Tips
August 2003
Following are some general tips and guidelines for moving Pets:
Dogs and Cats
Fish
Birds
Other Pets

Dogs and Cats
First, Get Pet moving quotes and Interview moving companies. Select the best Mover and decide on Moving Dates. Take your pet to the Veterinarian for the final Checkup before the move. Collect all the medical history from the Veterinarian, and find out about any Vaccination and other medical requirements for the new location. Create/update the Pet Resume of your pet with Personality, Behavior, Health and Grooming information including References (if available).
Make a new Pet ID with your emergency phone number in preparation for the move. Find a Veterinarian for your pet in the new location and inform them about the upcoming Move of your Pet. If you are not moving directly into your new house, please arrange for your pet stay during your this temporary housing period. Please decide on moving your Pet by Auto OR Air based on your pet's temperament, size, and personality.
If your pet is being moved by auto, then remember to take these items - Food, Water and a leash for letting your pet out of the auto. If your Pet is not used to travel in auto, then try taking a few "practice" travels. If your Pet gets "car-sickness", then ask your Veterinarian about "car sickness" medicine. Carry some newspapers or sheets to keep your auto clean while moving your pet.
If your pet is being moved by air, get all the information about their rules and regulations regarding pet travel. If your Pet Container does not meet airline regulations, the airline may provide a special container for your Pet. Sometimes you pet can ride in a baggage compartment. If the Veterinarian has given a Tranquilizer for your Pet, give them to your pet immediately before going to the airport. Please confirm that someone will pick up your pet and take care of it until you arrive (like Kennel).

Fish
Mostly, it is very impractical and risky to move fish. Please donate your pet to your friends OR your Pet store. If you want to move your fish, please contact your pet store for recommendations on moving your specific type of fish. Also, professional Pet Movers may be able to move your pet, please contact them for more information.

Birds
If you are moving in your car, Birds, hamsters and other smaller animals can be moved in your car. Keep enough food and water for your pets during travel. Also, cover the cages with cloth to keep the animals calm and quiet. For more recommendations on moving your specific type of bird, please contact your local pet store. Also, professional Pet Movers may be able to move your pet, please contact them for more information.

Other Pets
Most of the other pets can not be moved in your car. But, please contact your local pet store for recommendations on moving your pet animal. Also, professional Pet Movers may be able to move your pet, please contact them for more information.
